Where cultures meet
Mala means border in Norse and, ever since the 13th century, Malangen has been a border fjord between the agricultural community and the indigenous Sami people. Malangen can also be described as a melting pot because it’s a meeting point for three cultures: the Sami, Norwegians and Kvens (people of Finnish descent). Today, this concept is more accurate than ever.
Malangen and the people
At the head of the fjord, we can see traces of the hunters who lived in this area. It’s assumed that human settlement in this area dates right back to when the ice melted 10,000 years ago. Rock carvings have been found that are about 4,000 years old. Norwegian settlements were established along the fjord from the 7th century, while in the 12th century Malangen was the border between the kingdoms of Novgorod and Norway.
People moved north in the 16th century in search of land. They were later united with people from northern Finland who migrated to escape poverty and famine. This mixture of cultures led to occasional violent clashes, but there are also several stories of intercultural marriages. The three cultures eventually merged. However, Skutvik, where Malangen Resort is located today, remained the last Sami bastion until well into the 19th century.
Who owned Malangen ?
This is a complicated question! In the 18th century, all inhabitants were entitled to their “own” land. They entered into contracts with the landowner. Initially, there were only two landowners: the king and the church.
After the Kalmar War in 1613, the Danish-Norwegian king controlled Northern Norway, and from the 17th century most of Malangen was in the king’s possession. Only one farm was owned by the church – Forøy in the outer Malangen. The users of the properties were a mixture of Sami, Norwegians and Kvens.
In the middle of the 17th century, the king sold most of his properties. All the crown estates in the northern parts of Norway were transferred to Joachim Irgens in 1666. After Irgens’ death, the properties were divided into several smaller parts, and the part that included Troms district (Malangen) was taken over by Hans Andreas Moursund in 1783. It took until around 1900 before the land was sold to those who used it – the farmers in Malangen.
Today, people from all corners of the world meet at Malangen to have a chat and get to know each other. We promise to do our part to keep this valuable tradition alive. Welcome to Malangen!
